Where Mount Gravatt East sits

Mount Gravatt East is the post-war family suburb between Holland Park and Carindale: about nine kilometres south-east of the CBD and 4.2 square kilometres of quiet grid streets on the eastern slope of Mount Thompson, running down to Creek Road and the head of Salvin Creek. It has no shopping strip of its own and no train, and that is much of the appeal. The daily life happens at the edges: Mt Gravatt Plaza at the Creek and Logan Road corner, the Metropol shops at the Carindale line, the state school and the council pool on Wecker Road. The suburb was only gazetted in 1967, carved off Mount Gravatt, so the houses are 1950s onward rather than Queenslanders.

Boundaries
Nursery Road and the Mount Thompson ridge to the north-west where the suburb meets Holland Park, Pine Mountain Road to the north against Carina Heights, Creek Road on the east against Carindale and Mansfield, Broadwater Road at the southern tip toward Wishart, and Logan Road behind Mt Gravatt Plaza on the west. Cavendish Road runs the length of the suburb north to south, and Wecker Road and Newnham Road cross the southern half.
The roads
Cavendish Road (the spine: the Rocket buses, TAFE, the old Seton College site). Creek Road (the eastern edge: ALDI, Mt Gravatt Plaza at one end, the Metropol shops at the other). Wecker Road and Newnham Road (the school, the pool, Bunnings across the line, the 171 Rocket). Nursery Road and Pine Mountain Road (the northern edges toward Holland Park and Carina Heights)

The pockets

The suburb street by street: who each pocket suits and what to check there.

The numbers on the map above mark each pocket.

1The Wecker Road hub

Wecker Road, Newnham Road, Burcote Street, Enderby Street, Fairland Street, Hathway Street, Westbrooke Street, Tantallon Street and Stellman Street

The suburb's working centre. Mount Gravatt East State School and the council aquatic centre share the Wecker and Newnham Road corner, Snap Fitness is on the same block, St Marks Early Learning is a few streets back on Burcote Street and Bunnings is across Wecker Road on the Mansfield side. Graham Lord Park's fields are at 293 Creek Road. Post-war lowsets and highsets on 600 to 700 square metre blocks, and the Mansfield State High catchment for most of these streets.

Suits Families who want the state school, the pool and the gym on foot, and a short run to Garden City.

2Cavendish Road and the Camlet streets

Camlet Street, Kentish Street, Badminton Street, Mapleton Street, Pond Street, Dunbar Street, Oakfield Street, Boambillee Street and Little Cavendish Road

The middle of the suburb, either side of Cavendish Road. The 180, 181, 183 and 185 run up Cavendish Road to the city, the 113 and 172 wind through Camlet and Dunbar Streets, and Deli Dakota on Badminton Street is the neighbourhood cafe. TAFE Queensland's Mount Gravatt campus and the former Seton College site sit on Cavendish Road. Two of our purchases, on Camlet Street and Ginahgulla Street, sit in and just north of this pocket. Mount Gravatt East State School for primary; the secondary line between Mount Gravatt State High and Cavendish Road State High runs through here, so check the lot.

Suits Families who want the fast bus to the city and a house on a flat, walkable grid. Where most of our Mount Gravatt East buying has landed.

3The Nursery Road end and Mount Thompson

Ginahgulla Street, Carrara Street, Carthonia Street, Coolibah Street, Grunert Street, Nealdon Street, Hector Road, Gilliver Street, David Road, O'Callaghan Street, Wunulla Street and Panorama Place

The north-western corner, climbing toward Mount Thompson and the Holland Park line. The Carrara Street shops (the gluten-free bakehouse, Lily Pond) are at the corner, Wollombi Park and Panorama Place Park are the pocket parks, and the streets above Nursery Road are the highest in the suburb. This is the Seville Road State School and Cavendish Road State High corner of the catchment map. The bushland on Mount Thompson puts some of these lots inside a bushfire hazard buffer on City Plan, which matters for insurance and for a rebuild.

Suits Families buying for Seville Road State School and Cavendish Road State High, or who want the high ground and a view.

4The Pine Mountain Road side and Scurr Park

Styphelia Street, Blantyre Road, Grevillea Street, Wisteria Crescent, Tristania Way, Jacaranda Court, Bevan Street, Tick Street, Canterbury Street, Enfield Street and Foxglove Street

The north-eastern corner toward Carina Heights and Carindale, with the 1980s and 90s cul-de-sacs named for native plants and the townhouse complexes along Blantyre Road. Scurr Park sits on Salvin Creek, the Metropol shops (IGA, the doctors, the chemist, the bakery) are at the Creek Road and Pine Mountain Road corner, and Pine Mountain Road Childcare is on the ridge. Our Blantyre Road townhouse purchase and the Styphelia Street house are both here. Mount Gravatt East State School and Cavendish Road State High for most addresses, though the Blantyre Road complex on the eastern edge reads Mansfield State High. Check the overland flow layer on any block that dips toward the creek.

Suits Families who want a newer house or a townhouse near the Carindale shops, and buyers who want the golf club and Westfield Carindale five minutes away.

5The Creek Road west end and the Plaza

Springwood Street, Troubridge Street, Grenfell Street, Clausen Street, View Street, Crest Street, Rise Street, Hicks Street, Wardle Street, Hawkwood Street, Chrysler Street, Dykes Street and Vulcan Street

The southern and western streets, running down from the Nursery Road ridge to Mt Gravatt Plaza and the Mount Gravatt Library at the Creek and Logan Road corner. Chester Park Reserve on Clausen Street has the suburb's best playground cluster along Salvin Creek, Wardle Street Park is the other pocket park, and Story Behind The Coffee is on Broadwater Road at the southern tip. Mount Gravatt State School and Mount Gravatt State High for most of these streets. Our Hawkwood Street purchase, a four-bedroom house on a 405 square metre block, is the newer style of build turning up here.

Suits Families who want Coles, Woolworths and the library at the bottom of the street, and a bigger rebuilt house on a quiet grid.

Bus

The bus is the commute here, and it is good. Route 181 (Carindale Heights to City Rocket), 183 (Wishart to City Rocket) and 180 (Garden City to City Express) run up Cavendish Road, and 171 (Garden City to City Rocket via Newnham Road) runs Newnham Road and Creek Road, so most of the suburb is within a few streets of a limited-stops city service. Route 185 runs Cavendish Road and Newnham Road to the city and the Valley all day, 113 winds through Nursery Road, Springwood, Clausen, Dunbar and Camlet Streets to the city, 172 runs the same back streets to Greenslopes and the PA Hospital, 177 links Carindale to Griffith University, 182 links Garden City to Holland Park, 590 runs Creek Road to Carindale and Toombul, and the 598 and 599 Great Circle Line uses Creek Road. The N184 NightLink comes home up Cavendish Road. Frequency on the Rockets is peak-only, so check the timetable for the street you are looking at.

Train

No station. Coorparoo on the Cleveland line is the nearest, about five kilometres north up Cavendish Road, but most Mount Gravatt East families use the South East Busway instead: Upper Mount Gravatt station under Garden City, five to ten minutes down Newnham Road, or Holland Park West station across Logan Road, both with the Brisbane Metro M1 into the city.

Train timetable

Road

About nine kilometres to the CBD in a straight line: twenty to twenty-five minutes by car outside the peak, either up Logan Road and Cavendish Road or onto the Pacific Motorway via Klumpp Road at Upper Mount Gravatt. The Gateway Motorway is five minutes east via Creek Road and Old Cleveland Road, so the airport is about thirty minutes with the toll. Westfield Carindale and Garden City are each five to ten minutes.

Route numbers named in the bus notes above. Timetables on Translink.

Pinch points Creek Road and Cavendish Road both back up in the morning peak, Cavendish Road toward Coorparoo from about 7am and Creek Road toward Carindale and the Gateway. Wecker Road jams for the school and pool drop-off at 8.30am and 3pm. Newnham Road slows at the Garden City end, and the Mt Gravatt Plaza car park is full by 10am on a Saturday. Inspect a Creek Road, Cavendish Road or Newnham Road frontage at 5.30pm before you decide the traffic does not bother you.

The houses

What is here
Post-war Mount Gravatt East: 1950s and 60s timber and fibro highsets and brick lowsets on the grid streets, 1970s brick on the Wecker Road side, 1980s and 90s houses in the native-plant cul-de-sacs off Pine Mountain Road, townhouse complexes along Blantyre Road, Creek Road and Cavendish Road, and a steady run of knockdown-rebuilds. The suburb was gazetted in 1967 and the state school opened in 1955, so pre-war houses are rare. Units cluster along Creek Road and Cavendish Road; the rest is houses.
Block sizes
600 to 700 square metres is normal on the original grid, with our purchases on Camlet, Ginahgulla and Styphelia Streets at 607, 612 and 698 square metres. Newer builds sit on 400 to 450 square metre splits, and the Blantyre Road townhouses on around 220. That is the point of Mount Gravatt East over Holland Park: the same post-war block, a few minutes further from the busway, for less.
Character overlays
Almost none of the suburb carries the traditional building character overlay, which is why so much of it can be lifted, extended or rebuilt without the heritage hurdles of the inner east. The whole suburb is low density residential under City Plan: two storeys and 9.5 metres, 400 square metre minimum lots on the standard streets. Check the overlay on City Plan before you plan a rebuild.
How it was built
  1. 1955Mount Gravatt East State School opened on Wecker Road; pre-war houses are rare here.
  2. 1950s to 60sTimber and fibro highsets and brick lowsets filled the grid streets on 600 to 700 square metre blocks.
  3. 1967The suburb was gazetted in its own right, carved off Mount Gravatt.
  4. 1970sBrick houses went up on the Wecker Road side.
  5. 1980s to 90sThe cul-de-sacs named for native plants filled in off Pine Mountain Road toward Carindale.
  6. NowA steady run of knockdown-rebuilds, with newer builds on 400 to 450 square metre splits and townhouses along Blantyre Road.

What to check before you buy in Mount Gravatt East

Flood

No river here, but a creek. Salvin Creek, a tributary of Bulimba Creek, rises in the western streets, runs through Chester Park Reserve and Scurr Park and leaves the suburb at the Creek Road and Pine Mountain Road corner, and overland flow paths cross the streets that dip toward it. Pull the FloodWise Property Report for the exact lot, check the creek and overland flow layers on the Flood Awareness Map, and get an insurance quote before the building and pest.

Noise

Creek Road, Cavendish Road and Newnham Road all carry bus routes and the peak, and Wecker Road carries the school and the pool. The Gateway Motorway and the Pacific Motorway are both out of earshot for most of the suburb. Type the address into the Brisbane Airport flight path tool, then stand in the backyard at 7am and again at 9pm.

Overlays and approvals

Mostly clear of the character overlay, but two others matter here: the bushfire hazard buffer on the Mount Thompson side of the Nursery Road end, and the overland flow paths along Salvin Creek. City Plan's interactive mapping shows every overlay on the lot, and Development.i shows what the neighbours have been approved to build, which in Mount Gravatt East is often a two-storey rebuild next door. Check Development.i for the old Boral quarry land off Pine Mountain Road as well; it is fenced and full of water today and any application there changes the northern streets.

Catchments

Four primary catchments and three secondary, the three high schools all capped. Check the lot on EdMap, then ring the school.

Red flags

  • A 1950s fibro highset sold as a lift-and-build without an asbestos report. Much of the original stock is fibro-clad; price the removal before you price the renovation.
  • A low block on Salvin Creek, in the western streets or behind the Pine Mountain Road cul-de-sacs, with an overland flow path through the yard and no FloodWise report on file.
  • A Creek Road, Cavendish Road or Newnham Road frontage with single-glazed bedrooms at the front. All three carry buses.

Where the value sits

  • An original post-war house on 600 to 700 square metres outside the character overlay, on a flat street a few minutes from a Rocket bus, that can be reworked or rebuilt without the heritage hurdles of the inner east.
  • The Camlet streets and the Wecker Road hub, where the school, the pool and the bus are on foot and the price is still below Holland Park across Nursery Road.
  • The Nursery Road end on the high side, where a rebuild picks up the ridge and the view, provided the bushfire buffer and the Seville Road catchment suit the family.

Buying in Mount Gravatt East: the questions we get

Mostly Mount Gravatt East State School for primary, with Seville Road State School taking the Nursery Road end, Mount Gravatt State School the south-western streets and Wishart State School a small strip at the southern tip along Broadwater Road. High school splits three ways: Cavendish Road State High to the north, Mount Gravatt State High to the south and west, Mansfield State High to the south-east, all three capped under enrolment management plans gazetted in August 2025. Check the exact address on EdMap and ask us which side of the line a house sits on.

Not from the river. Salvin Creek runs through the western streets and the parks behind Pine Mountain Road, and overland flow paths cross the blocks that dip toward it. The ridge streets around Nursery Road and Cavendish Road do not. Every Mount Gravatt East purchase we make starts with the FloodWise report.

By bus. The 181 and 183 Rockets and the 180 Express run up Cavendish Road, the 171 Rocket runs Newnham Road and Creek Road, and the 185 runs all day to the city and the Valley. The Brisbane Metro M1 leaves from Upper Mount Gravatt station under Garden City or from Holland Park West. By car it is twenty to twenty-five minutes outside the peak.

No. Coorparoo on the Cleveland line is the nearest, about five kilometres north, and most families use the busway instead. The Rocket buses on Cavendish Road and Newnham Road are the reason the commute works.

In 2026, a renovated three or four-bedroom post-war house on around 600 square metres in the Camlet streets, the Wecker Road hub or the Nursery Road end. Our purchases on Camlet Street and Ginahgulla Street, both on just over 600 square metres, settled at $1,440,000 and $1,431,000.

Holland Park has the busway across Logan Road, Whites Hill Reserve at the back fence and the Holland Park State School catchment, and it costs more. Mount Gravatt East has the same post-war blocks, its own state school and council pool on Wecker Road, the Rocket buses on Cavendish Road, and a lower price for the same house. Families who want the yard and the school on foot, and can live without the strip, usually end up in Mount Gravatt East.
